INDIO — Aaron Jimenez and his teammates showed up one morning for a routine race at Mt. San Antonio College that they expected to win. The group had been pegged as the next great team of runners at Indio High School, a place where speedy runners go to get faster — and win Desert Valley League titles. Standing alone before the race that morning was a slender sophomore who had moved to Indio from Colorado three months earlier. He was an unknown to his teammates and the coaches who had spent almost the duration of the semester recruiting him to the team. But within the first moments of the 1.97-mile race, Jimenez noticed something particular about his new teammate, whose running ability had only previously been witnessed in modest practice runs.
