DyeStat Discussions - EP794 - Albert Caruana
Published by
Coach Albert Caruana from the Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough, Calif. joins DyeStat editor Doug Binder to discuss his teams' sweep of the CIF Division 5 state team championships on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. All three of the team's wins on Saturday (Harvard-bound senior Kaiya Brooks won the girls individual crown on the 5-kilometer course in 17:54.2) were the first state wins of any kind for the private school of 350 located between San Francisco and Palo Alto, and the first by any Central Coast Section teams in Division 5 since the state expanded to five divisions in 1996. The boys won 73-77 over Menlo and the girls eked out a 127-129 victory over San Francisco University, the defending champion and winner of a California record 11 state titles. It was the first Division 5 sweep since Flintridge Prep in 2015. Caruana has coached for 30 years, including the past 27 at Crystal Springs Uplands School. His boys' team time of 80:02 is the second-fastest in the history of the Division 5 state meet and would have been eighth in the all-division merge. More videos |
