Saugus boys cross country team not done yet, seeks first state championship

Although the Saugus girls cross country team has won a state-record seven consecutive championships, the Centurions are still searching for their first boys state title in the Division II final Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Saugus, which has finished runner-up in the state twice in the past three seasons, captured its second Southern Section Division II crown in four years Saturday with an 83-118 victory over Dos Pueblos at Mt. San Antonio College.

But there was little celebration for the Centurions, especially from coach Rene Paragas, who reminded his athletes of the outcome of the 2010 state championship. 

After defeating Loyola by nine points at the section final, Saugus suffered a 77-90 setback against the Cubs the following week. Loyola clocked a Division II record of 78:01 that year at Woodward Park, with Saugus’ effort of 78:42 ranking fifth in division history.
