They ran with eyes on a top seven finish. The Big Bear High School girls cross country team reached its goal with room to spare.
The Lady Bears qualified for the CIF State Championships with a third-place finish in the Southern Section Division 4 Finals Nov. 23 at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. It’s the third time in school history for a girls cross country team to make it to the big run—CIF State Championships.
There was never any doubt in head coach Jonathan Stiles’ mind that Big Bear would make the grade. In fact, if the Lady Bears had been healthy, they would have done even better, Stiles said. “Hanna (Cabrera) and Melissa (Olson) both got sick Thursday,” Stiles said. “I made them take naps instead of practice. The fact that we got third and were only five points from second, if they had been healthy we would have finished second, easy as pie.”
