FRESNO — They came to Woodward Park on Saturday led by a former baseball coach and without even a fancy E-Z Up with their name on it.

They left hours later with an improbable state championship.

Fontana Jurupa Hills, the boys cross country team that’s been very good all season but rarely mentioned in state-championship discussions, stunned the Division3 field with a 15-point win over state-title favorite Brea Olinda in the CIF-State Cross Country Championships.

Jurupa Hills was one of two Inland area teams to win state titles Saturday, as Temecula Great Oak’s girls made their top national ranking stand up with an easy Division1 victory, their third in four years. Big Bear’s Caleb Webb also won an individual title in Division4.

The Spartans, meanwhile, won Jurupa Hills’ first state championship in any sport in its fourth year of existence.
